Food Waste Study
Food Waste Study
Making strides in the field of avian nutrition.
A tremendous amount of work has gone into curating our Diet & Nutrition Guide that is a cumulation of today’s modern knowledge on parrot diets. This does not mean, however, that we have reached even a fraction of understanding on how to best supply nutrition to psittacines. One of the pitfalls of our guide is that we often use kcal as a measurement based on grams provided with a species that is notorious for being wasteful. This makes it hard to ascertain how much food should be provided to your animal when we have no baseline for the percentage they actually consume versus what ends up on the floor. This study is hoping to open that door – and establish a number based on species and feeding method to ensure that we are feeding our birds the appropriate amount of food considering their natural wasteful behavior. The best part? You can help! We rely on our wide network of partners and followers to conduct the citizen’s science that enables us the gather data. Learn more below.
If you would like to participate in this ongoing study – please download the form below and follow the instructions listed. The study will take place over the course of 14 days and requires you to weigh out food at the beginning of the day – as well as at the end of the day. Study results should be emailed to support@psittacine.org.
